It´s really not about telling your friends you are just getting out of bed, but rather a tool for finding out what the people you are aspiring towards are reading.
Robert Scoble coined the term "the friend divide" and descibes quite well what good you can get out of Twitter.

A trusted sign that a new web service is coming of age is always that it´s initial lack of a business model is being replace by some form of advertising, as rumour has it about Twitter too, - to much frustration among those users who do still believe that there is in fact such a thing as a free lunch.
